College Students: Coping with Life Away from Home

The transition to college is a big one. It’s full of new experiences and new people, and it can be difficult to get used to.

It’s a big move to make. You’re leaving home, and it’s not just your parents and siblings that you’ll be leaving behind; it’s also your friends, your pets, and the neighborhood you’ve known since childhood.

Here are some tips to help you ease into your college life:

• Start your research early
There is no reason to wait until your first semester starts to begin learning all you can about your school and campus life. Doing so will help you feel more prepared when it comes time to start classes, and it will help you get acclimated sooner rather than later.

Get involved in campus activities right away
Get involved in clubs, sports teams, or academic groups, whatever interests you! The sooner you start feeling connected to the campus community, the more at home you’ll feel later on.

• Know your limits
It’s important to know when you need a break from schoolwork or socializing so that you don’t burn out early on in your college career. Schedule time for yourself, it’s okay if it’s just an hour every day or every other day; it will help keep your mind fresh and give you time to recharge before jumping back into things!

• Take advantage of free resources on campus
Most colleges offer lots of free services for students like tutoring, counseling, or even just places where people can hang out so that they don’t feel alone.
